The core of the archipelago is composed of San Domino and San Nicola, the only two inhabited, just 200 meters from each other separated by the clayey islet of Cretaccio, while not far from the island of Capraia (contraction of caperaia, due to the presence of many native caper plants. From the coast, departing from Marina Sveva, Rodi Garganico or Vieste, you can reach San Domino by sailing boat: the largest island (but not the administrative center as the town hall is in San Nicola) has a historic center with many clubs, bars, restaurants and shops and a marina; pay attention because it is also the route of the ferries that dock here from Termoli. The island, like the others off-limits to cars, is the greenest of the archipelago, covered by Aleppo pines, and rich in avian fauna: from a beautiful panoramic point it is possible to observe the Diomedee, the local sea birds. A mythical name, deriving from the legend that the Homeric hero Diomedes makes a stop on these shores and then spread the Greek culture over a large part of the Mediterranean and for some also buried here. Although small, the island offers many emotions to the yachtsman with considerable possibilities for underwater activities: towards the north Cala degli Schiavoni and the Faraglioni dei Pagliai, with tiny beaches accessible by sea, then rounding the cape to the north again a jagged coast where the Cala degli English, in whose center the tourist village of TCI. In the southern part suggestive caves to explore by boat: the Grotta delle Viole and that of Bue Marino, 70 meters deep, are the most beautiful. Tornado towards the port, Cala Matana, famous for the overhang of the rocks on the sea and even more for the residence that Lucio Dalla had, to whom he dedicated the song Luna Matana. The only sandy beach on the island is Cala delle Arene, just next to the marina. The two major islands almost touch each other, so it is a joke to sail towards San Nicola: the massive aspect of the rock ridge is picturesquely crowned by the historic monastery of Santa Maria al Mare, built by the Benedictines of Montecassino and then fortified in Angevin age to then become a penitentiary in the nineteenth century. It can also be visited on foot, although steep and is an open-air museum, where the monastery, the church, towers and surrounding walls give us the historical dimension and the numerous bars, restaurants and meeting places provide the playful profile. The circumnavigation of the island ends with Punta Santa Maria, after which you can head towards the flat Capraia, uninhabited and part of the Marine Park: it is therefore necessary to check which areas are navigable. In front of the island of San Nicola stand the Scoglietti di Capraia, with a votive statue of San Padre Pio. To conclude the visit, you can reach Pianosa at 12 miles, but remember that being part of the Integral Marine Reserve, it can only be approached at 500 meters. To conclude, the Tremiti Islands are an excellent combination of clear and navigable sea, nature, history and tourist attractions in a peaceful setting for sailing and suitable for everyone.
